Letter from the President

As the President of Queer Active (formally Team Vancouver) thank you for taking the time to review our new website. Queer Active is focused on connecting queer youth (16–25) with other like-minded individuals who want to get involved in a no-pressure environment where sport and friendship are the focus, all while having fun through shared experiences.

I joined the board of Team Vancouver in November 2009 as a way to ‘give-back’ to the queer community. When I was coming-out as a lesbian woman it was through Dragon Boating (Sisters In Sync) that I made my baby steps in the queer community rather than the clubs and party scene. After a year of active Board involvement it had become clear to us all that if we wanted to continue to be of greater service to the queer community, and especially queer youth, that we needed to change our focus and become much more relevant. Thus Queer Active was born.

We hired a professional consultant who specializes in re-invigorating non-profit community based organizations and through a process of in-depth analysis and after many, many hours of dedicated work by all Queer Active board members we’ve chartered a new path. We are proud of our work and our new Mission — “Empowering Queer Individuals through Sport and Fitness.”

My professional life is in health care working at St Paul’s hospital since 1987 and I’ve seen firsthand the damage that an unhealthy lifestyle of drugs and drinking can do. It concerns me as community member, and as a mother, to see many youth, and especially queer youth, headed down this slippery slope.

It was through my coming-out involvement of paddling with Sisters-In-Sync where I found my strongest friendships and shared connections in the queer community and as the President of Queer Active it is these powerful and positive experiences I want to pass along, especially to all the queer youth in the Lower Mainland.

As the first President of Queer Active I am committed to our new Mission and Strategic Vision and will ensure we reach, if not exceed our goals as we move forward and continue to build this new organization. I strongly encourage you to review our new site in detail and to let me know what you think and more importantly to get involved – whether as a queer youth looking for new ways to meet other queers; as a supporter/donor; as a Board member or as an essential partner helping us to deliver on what we promise to so.

I am committed to our new Mission and Strategic Vision and I look forward to many successes for not only queer youth, but also for our community as a whole. A new direction and a new beginning.

Tracey Williams.
President – Queer Active.
